The Maker

Hi, I'm Bruno.

I own and operate Medeiros Knives— a small, one-man culinary knife workshop in downtown San Jose, California.

I have a passion for design and have been doing it professionally for over 20 years. The need to make has been in me since I was a kid. Music, cooking, photography, sewing, woodworking, instrument making, even chocolatiering... I immersed myself in an endless stream of hobbies.

Back in 2011 the hankering for a new hobby hit me hard. I thought I was getting into archery but somehow it turned into making fashion leather goods . I ran a leather goods business for 9 years, but the need to try something new was always lurking.

When the little voice in my head that says ‘try something new’ came back, it was around the same time I was travelling in Japan. I found myself spending hours in knife shops, asking shopkeepers about different aspects of their knives. What are the different blade shapes for? What’s the difference between these steels? Why is this knife flat on one side?

I fought that little voice for months, but from the beginning I knew it was a losing battle. I had to make a chef’s knife. And why not? It’s something we use on a daily basis. An essential tool that is found in every household around the globe. If I was going to be investing my time and energy into making something, it might as well be something useful.

So I made a knife. Then I made a bunch more. And then I couldn't think of a better name, so Medeiros Knives was born.

Nothing I make is mass produced. Every knife you’ll see on this site has been hand-crafted by me in my workshop. That means that I don’t make a ton of knives, but the few knives I do make have the utmost care put into them. They are creations that I’m proud to send out into the world.

Love,
Bruno Medeiros
